Oppressive governments and radical interest groups always try to exert a measure of excessive control over the people at large. From "pro-family" organizations that actively blow issues of sexuality in television and other forms of media out of proportion to moral guardians that feel we shouldn't be exposed to anything they find "obscene", these control freaks are everywhere. And, unfortunately, they've found a new target: the Internet.
The current issue of much debate is that of pornography on the Internet: these radical groups feel that it should in some way be made illegal, which is disappointing, to say the least. Another facet of this topic that is in the public spotlight is the issue of the oppressive countries that actively censor and monitor large segments of their populations' Internet access; China, Iran, and Vietnam are just a few that fall into this category.
That leaves us, members of the Internet culture, in a bit of a hard place. As an issue that would hit close to home for a large number of high-schoolers, think about what it would be like if you logged on to Facebook one day and got an error message saying that your country had blocked access to it. That'd suck, right?
Unfortunately, that is one of the possible goals for some of these groups and governments that seek to censor the Internet. Only by standing up to them and saying no can we make sure that it never happens outside of the countries that already institute such censorship.
tl;dr: Internet censorship should be censored.
